Slow quarter for company creation in 1Q25, but megarounds persist

Pace of seed/series A fundings down compared with past 1Qs, yet series of nine-digit investments pushed mean round size to new high

The pace of early-stage venture funding announcements by biotechs appears to be slowing, with seed and series A deals reaching a decade-long low in 1Q25, although not by a wide margin.

BioCentury’s BCIQ database recorded 77 seed and series A fundings in the first three months of 2025, the lowest number for a first quarter since 1Q15, when there were 62 fundings. The 1Q25 figure was eight fewer than the 85 deals in 1Q24, following four consecutive years with triple-digit figures...
